Blazing World, HAGG, Slop @ The Wild Musuem, Prudhoe
LEDs, wood, acetate, chain, mobile phone, cable ties
Taking place in a wild, natural landscape in Northumberland, outside of Prudhoe, this exhibition was a chance for people to connect with natural surroundings, viewing contemporary art in a new and unfamiliar setting. Taking the artwork out of the white cube context allowed the audience to relate to the work in a more personal way, stripping away the distance and alienation that can sometimes come with a gallery setting, enabling a more accessible and open experience.
Based on Margaret Cavendish Novel, The Blazing World, the pieces conceptually and physically explore our social systems and hierarchies that dictate how our environments, people and animals are treated in contemporary society. The artificial lights of the lightboxes and video installations attracted insects to the artwork, creating a dynamic interaction between the pieces and wildlife. Audio pieces guided the audience on an auditory journey, intermingling with the sites nature sounds of rustling leaves and rushing water, creating a live dialogue between nature we were immersed in and the social make up of the region.
